NKOTBSB at Staples Center: Concert Review

The combined supergroup featuring New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys took concertgoers back in time with a highly energetic and entertaining show.

Barely a tween was to be found at the concert headlined by boy-band supergroup NKOTBSB on Friday night, but you’d hardly know it from the deafening screams inside the packed Staples Center in Los Angeles.

While the fans may have gotten older, it seems their appreciation for late-‘80s /early-‘90s hitmakers New Kids on the Block and late-‘90s/early-2000s mega-sellers Backstreet Boys hasn’t diminished. (It’s likely that the mostly twenty- and thirtysomething female audience -- who stood pretty much during the entire 2 1/2-hour show -- was comprised nearly entirely of fans who had grown up with one of the bands, and this probably wasn’t their first time seeing them in person based on the vintage concert tees some sported.)

But from the start, NKOTB and BSB came out to entertain, and the audience didn’t leave disappointed. Sure, the costumes may be less flashy, the hair a little thinner and the voices a bit lower -- the Kids and Boys are now in their thirties and forties -- but inside Staples Center, fans were transported back in time. The groups knew what the fans wanted -- hit songs, flashes of skin and some well-choreographed dance moves -- and they more than delivered.

In a nod to their heydays, NKOTBSB kicked off the show with a mash-up of “Single”/”The One” to the melody of Coldplay’s “Vida La Vida,” which includes the line: “I used to rule the world.” From there, the two groups took turns turning out their greatest hits, and it was soon clear all nine singers haven’t lost any of their vocal abilities.

While NKOTB member Joey McIntyre’s voice has certainly changed from when he recorded “Please Don’t Go Girl” as a youngster, the song actually benefits -- and gets an update -- from his lower register and more mature tone. Meanwhile, the night’s standout had to be NKOTB’s Jordan Knight, who impressed by hitting the falsettos in “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind)” and “I’ll Be Loving You Forever” as if he were still in his teens.

One of the biggest crowd-pleasing moments came courtesy of Donnie Wahlberg, who ripped off his tank top and wiped sweat from his chest on it while singing "Cover GIrl." (It should be duly noted that the years have been very good to these guys, who were all in tip-top shape). At this point, the audience was going wild with anticipation, and as expected, Wahlberg threw it out into the audience, where there was a bit of a mad dash to claim the souvenir.

For BSB fans, the highlight of the show was probably the surprise appearance of original member Kevin Richardson, who left the group in 2006. He popped up during a performance of “I Want It That Way” to screams that felt as if they could be heard all the way in NKOTB’s Boston hometown.

“Wow, this feels good,” Richardson told the ecstatic crowd of being reunited with the group and being on stage again.

One comical moment came when the Backstreet Boys brought up members of the audience to serenade with their hit “I’ll Never Break Your Heart.” The four chosen were three females and one very good-natured male, who played along as A.J. McLean sang lyrics including “From the first day that I saw your smiling face/Honey, I knew that we would be together forever” directly to him.

Indeed, both groups clearly appreciate their fans and made efforts to include them in the show, whether by singing amid the crowd (NKOTB) or making a midshow entrance down the audience stairways, shaking hands and even posing for pictures while singing (BSB). In addition, the stage was set up to give concertgoers optimal views -- even those in the cheap seats -- with a catwalk-like extension that covered more than half the length of the Staples floor and included rising platforms at either end.

Overall, the night could be described as one big nostalgia fest, albeit one that surprisingly didn’t feel dated. In addition to the set list -- and NKOTB pulling out their signature side-to-side leg kicks for “The Right Stuff,” another fan-pleaser -- both groups scattered portions of songs ranging from AC/DC’s “Back in Black,” Prince’s “Raspberry Beret,” Queen’s “We Will Rock You” and Bel Biv Devoe’s “Poison” throughout the performances.

“There are two generations here,” McIntyre told the crowd at one point. “To some, it’s 1989 again, and to some others, it’s 1999 again. … There’s no reason it has to stop.”

Still, the combined NKOTBSB did bring things into 2011 by singing their catchy recent single “Don’t Turn Out the Lights (D.T.O.T.L.)” before heading into an encore that included the NKOTB’s “Hangin’ Tough,” BSB’s “Backstreet’s Back” and the “NKOTBSB Mash-Up” featuring snippets of hits that have been re-recorded.

The nine guys have obvious chemistry and enjoy touring together, but say this were a battle of the boy bands: Who would win? While BSB’s songs hold up better overall, NKOTB brought a bit more energy and stage presence to the highly entertaining show.

Opening act Jordin Sparks proved she’s come a long way since her American Idol days. The Season 6 winner, looking fit and performing like a pro, sang an energetic set that included her hits “Tattoo” and “No Air.” She can belt a tune, no doubt, but a heavy reliance on backing vocals prompted one concertgoer to lament that she was giving off the impression she was lip-synching.

The first opening act, Ashlyne Huff, did her best to warm up the crowd with frequent shout-outs to the headliners that drew cheers, though she and her backup dancers’ silver-sequined costumes and backing DJ made the performance seem more appropriate for a nightclub than a venue like Staples.

Review: New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys in Phoenix

A decade or two ago, when the Kids were boys and the Boys were kids, the mere mention of pop groups New Kids on the Block or Backstreet Boys would illicit ear-piercing screams and happy tears from throngs of adoring teenage girls.

Thursday night, June 30, at the NKOTBSB boy-band blowout at US Airways Center in Phoenix, the two groups proved that the boy-band/girl-fan dynamic still holds true - even now that the boys and girls are all grown up.

It was hard to tell which group attracted more fans to the concert, which gave equal billing to '80s studs New Kids on the Block (Donnie Wahlberg, 41; Danny Wood, 42; Joey McIntyre, 38; Jordan Knight, 41; Jonathan Knight, 42) and '90s heartthrobs Backstreet Boys (Brian Littrell, 36; Nick Carter, 31; A.J. McLean, 33; Howie Dorough, 37). The fifth BSB Kevin Richardson no longer performs with the group.

Nearly every person in the female-dominated, packed arena danced, howled, and clicked dozens of photos throughout the two-and-a-half-hour show, during which the two groups would switch on stage every five or six songs.

Twenty-somethings wore T-shirts declaring their love for the BSB in puffy paint, and 30-somethings held "I heart Danny" and "Praise the Jord" signs. A group of fans waved "Get naked" signs at whichever group was currently on stage.

The show opened with a medley of NKOTB's "Single" and BSB's "The One" arranged to the melody of Coldplay's "Viva La Vida."

The guys were dressed in dark clothes, wearing the suit jackets, sleeveless vests or T-shirts befitting their parts as the bad boy, hunk or goofball of the group.

The first song had all the quintessential boy-band qualities: synchronized choreography, spotlighted solos and tight harmonies - elements that held true for the entire show.

It also highlighted the extreme entertainment value of the set, giving fans a taste of the fireworks, fog, air-launched streamers, floor-length runway and two circular hydraulic stages that would punctuate the performances.

The NKOTB took the first set, easing their way onto Nostalgia Road with the 2008 single "Summertime." A few songs later, the Kids were back in 1989, showing off their signature sideways kicks and coordinated pelvic thrusts during "You Got It (The Right Stuff)."

BSB joined the first-generation boy-band for an explosive rendition of "Larger Than Life," the second single of the BSB's 1999 album "Millennium" that sold more than 13 million copies.

Then it was back to the Block for a few ballads.

Jordan Knight started off the slower set with the NKOTB version of the Delfonics' "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind)." While Wahlberg, Wood, McIntyre and Jonathan Knight danced behind mic stands, Jordan walked the length of the runway flexing his on-point falsetto.

Wood got a turn in the spotlight during a mash-up of "Valentine Girl" and "If You Go Away."

And McIntyre closed the set with a stirring a cappella solo at the end of New Kids' '88 breakthrough single "Please Don't Go Girl." The crowd swooned as he crooned the lyrics "Please don't go, girl/You would ruin my whole word." The pitch of the screams amplified with every hip gyration until the air seemed to vibrate.

It was the BSBs' turn to serenade the ladies next. Dressed in white iridescent suits, they started with "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" from "Millennium," followed by "10,000 Promises" from "Backstreet's Back."

"Speaking on behalf of all the guys, I have to say we always love coming to Arizona," Dorough told the crowd. "Arizona has the most beautiful ladies in all the world. I think it's time to bring some Arizona love onstage."

Each member walked into the crowd, taking the hand of an adoring fan and leading her onstage. After receiving a long-stemmed rose, the women sat on stools as the boys sang them "I'll Never Break Your Heart" on bended knee.

The NKOTB returned with one of their best-selling singles, "Step by Step." During the electric guitar-heavy rendition of "Cover Girl," Wahlberg enraptured fans by showing off his (better-than-ever) washboard abs after ripping off his black tank top Hulk Hogan-style.

McIntyre relaxed the audience, taking them from the Wahlberg-inspired "Whoo" to more of an "Aww" with a sentimental speech:

"It sort of feels like there's two generations in the house tonight. For some of us, it feels like it's 1989 all over again. For some, it feels like it's 1999 again. Whatever year it is, it feels like magic."

Then, like magic, the BSB appeared on the stairs at the top of the arena's first level singing "Shape of My Heart." Fans rushed nearer to the aisles, jumping over seats with their cameras and reaching over one another to touch the singers.

Once they reached the stage, they progressed through several hits, including "All I Have to Give" and "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)."

The show ended like it started: with both groups onstage and plenty of pyrotechnics. Representing their hometowns, the NKOTB sported Boston Celtics jerseys while the BSB wore Orlando Magic jerseys as they sang a medley of "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" and "Hangin' Tough."

Glendale native Jordin Sparks, the 2007 "American Idol" winner, opened the show. Sparks, now 21, seems to be over any of the shyness she had as a teen performer, dancing with attitude and belting out vocals with ease.

"It's been awhile since I've been here," she said. "My family and friends are all here . . . I'm excited to be back. Thanks for all the support over the last five years."

She also had the look of a diva, wearing a glittery purple fringe dress and her hair in a mess of curls reminiscent of a young Janet Jackson.

Sparks performed with two male dancers, and sang six songs, including "No Air," "Tattoo," "Battlefield" and her latest single "I Am Woman."

New Kids On the Block and Backstreet Boys have grown up a bit since their heydays on MTV and the music charts, and so have their fans. But that hasn't stopped the bands from cashing in on nostalgia, or people from buying tickets for this tour. Those people seem to fall into two categories: mostly old fans of either or both bands, and to a lesser extent, non-fans who are curious to see what the big deal was and who still shows up to see these guys. We sent one person from each camp to the NKOTBSB show -- Melissa Fossum, who was a huge fan of the Backstreet Boys, and Daniel Raven, who secretly liked New Kids on The Block and turned out to be one of the few guys in attendance.

Background:

Melissa: Like most girls born in the late '80s, I went through a huge boy band phase. During the TRL heyday, I was just as crazy about the Backstreet Boys as most of the girls screaming like banshees on TV. Unlike them, BSB's music never brought me to tears, although I did concoct a few dance routines with my friends.

Daniel: As a 28-year-old guy who primarily listens to gangsta rap and industrial music, I've spent a long time trying to hide the fact that I played the hell out of the New Kids' album Hangin' Tough when I was six or seven and owned it on cassette. I viewed the opportunity to go to this show as a chance to end my decades-long repression of the fact that I was once a boy band fan and finally find closure.

Audience:

Melissa: Donnie Wahlberg from NKOTB said there were two generations in the audience -- those who think it's 1989 and those who think it's 1999. Backstreet fans may have dominated the audience, but New Kids fans were equally energetic. The screaming from the audience was contagious. And, well, the boys looked good and that was definitely something to cheer about. The gals hooted and hollered at all the chest rubs and crotch thrusts throughout the evening. At times, it felt more like a Chippendale's performance than a concert. Some girls even had signs that read "Get Naked." I can't complain.

Daniel: There were so many young willing virgins (and their mothers) at this show. If I didn't have a girlfriend, this would have been a highly productive evening. Zero competition for chicks in the stands, and the guys on stage were obviously gay, so no issues there.

Wardrobe:

Melissa: Each band had multiple costume changes. The show started with both bands sharing the stage in leather jackets. New Kids' finest ensemble was the matching suits and fedoras worn during a medley of slow love songs. They looked as sharp as the Rat Pack. Both bands overkilled glitter. I understand that boy bands aren't the most macho thing in the world, but there's just something wrong with Donnie Wahlberg's bedazzled Public Enemy shirt. I know Flava Flav likes bling, but still...

Daniel: After a surprisingly well-produced intro video that showcased the members of both groups and put names to faces (presumably so girls in the audience would know what to name their shower heads), the groups appeared together on stage in one spray-tan colored mass of Botox and Bedazzled t-shirts. The only thing "Hangin' Tough" on stage were these guys' tampon strings. Although the groups eventually moved on to more tasteful ensembles like Bedazzled military outfits, suits, and jeans and wife beaters, when they first appeared they were wearing the largest collection of sparkly accessories I have ever seen. Hats aren't supposed to hurt peoples' eyes when light hits them, and Donnie Wahlberg will NEVER be cool enough to rock a Public Enemy T-shirt, let alone one made of rhinestones.

Stage Presence:

Melissa: Both bands played like they were still at the top of their game. Howie Dorough sang former Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson's parts and did a decent job in his place, although one of my friends kept griping at his absence. I was really impressed by NKOTB's singing. They managed to hit all the high notes in spite of recording songs before finishing puberty. Neither band changed their choreography much, sticking to their music video moves.

Daniel: NKOTB outshined the Backstreet Boys in the same ways that good sex surpasses bad sex. The former were patient, considerate, focused, and passionate, while the latter were clumsy, frantic, selfish, and overly eager. While the New Kids exercised restraint and allowed whoever was singing the main part of a particular song to be the focus of attention, the members of BSB were constantly jostling one another to get noticed by the audience. The Backstreet Boys' choreography lacked cohesion, and because the individual singers kept flailing around in their own ways and shouting mindless nonsense like "PHOENIX!" over each other's parts, they came off as immature and amateurish. In BSB's defense, their songs tend to contain lead vocals from all the group's members, while NKOTB's typically feature one member providing primary vocals and the rest in a supporting role. Still, the Backstreet Boys' performance left me feeling violated.

Song Selection:

Melissa: The first half of the show was extremely energetic until New Kids put on their Rat Pack ensemble and sang a bunch of sappy love songs. Things continued to slow down when BSB did the same thing. These songs were all bunched together and should have been broken up. A few covers snuck their way into the set. NKOTBSB kicked things off with Coldplay's "Viva la Vida," which was interesting at first, but got pretty weird toward the end. The song doesn't translate well to a boy band. A Rusko song brought Nick Carter to the end of the catwalk doing booty drops. He lead BSB's version of "Raspberry Beret," which sounded good. New Kids sprinkled in some surprises, singing part of Queen's "We Will Rock You" and including the guitar riff from AC/DC's "Back in Black."

Daniel: While the Backstreet Boys got great audience response from boy band classics like "Backstreet's Back," "I Want It That Way," and "Shape Of My Heart," the group's shoddy showmanship and lack of class overshadowed the music and undermined their efforts. Hits from NKOTB included "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)," "Step By Step," and "You Got It (The Right Stuff)." The New Kids simply have better songs. Sorry, Melissa. The older boy band even beat out BSB when it came to covers. The "My Favorite Girl" mash-up with Bell Biv DeVoe's "Poison" kicked ass and almost made up for the group's outfits. The Backstreet Boys' mash-up of "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" with Prince's "Raspberry Beret" fell flat. Who told BSB they were worthy of covering Prince?

Band Comparison:

Melissa: In spite of my Backstreet bias, I was very impressed with New Kids on the Block. I was expecting them to not have as much energy as BSB, but they sounded great, even if I wasn't that familiar with their material.

Daniel: Watching these groups trade the stage for two hours, I got the sense that NKOTB are consummate professionals who genuinely like each other, have spent their whole lives honing their craft, and haven't allowed obscurity or many years of inactivity to dull their skills. I also became convinced that the Backstreet Boys only care about making money and banging groupies and probably figure they don't need to practice for their live shows to keep doing that, so long as their stylists can keep them looking good in music videos and their producers can keep them sounding nice on the radio.

Closing Thoughts:

Melissa: This show was a lot better than anticipated. I was all smiles, feeling the same way I did seeing Arcade Fire and Matt & Kim. I'm sure I'm just as surprised to make that statement as you are to read it. Tonight, I watched a concert with the same enthusiasm as a tween. I don't expect to feel it for any other '90s band unless the Spice Girls come back to town.

Los Backstreet Boys llaman a TVXQ una imagen de sí mismos.

Aunque TVXQ es aparentemente el grupo reinante en la música pop asiática, no son la única banda de chicos con un éxito épico.

Como un grupo que ha vendido más de 130 millones de discos en todo el mundo, los Backstreet Boys son sin duda uno de los grupos más reconocidos y de mayores ventas de todos los tiempos. Aunque su debut fue hace mucho tiempo, en 1993, este grupo aún sigue unido y regresaron en 2007. De hecho, incluso lanzaron un nuevo álbum titulado This is Us el pasado octubre, y un segundo disco de grandes éxitos hace apenas un mes. Aunque celebridades como Lady Gaga y Soulja Boy definen el pop estadounidense para muchas personas en estos días, este quinteto convertido en cuarteto es uno de los artistas pop más exitosos de las últimas décadas.

“Lo bueno de nuestro show es que podemos interactuar directamente con nuestros fanáticos y verlos cara a cara”, continuó el grupo. Los Boys también revelaron que el escenario estaría dispuesto con muchas ideas creativas y un número de baile. También contaron que su comida coreana favorita era el bulgogi (barbecue coreana).

“Nuestros fanáticos… nos hacen sonar como Superman, sin embargo somos personas completamente normales”, continuaron, mostrando humildad a pesar de su éxito – una cualidad que definitivamente comparten con TVXQ.

Si realmente se ven reflejados, estoy seguro de que muchos Cassies esperan que TVXQ permanezca unido eternamente, tal como su contraparte estadounidense.

México, DF. Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell y AJ McLean, que conforman el exitoso grupo popero estadunidense de los años noventa Backstreet Boys, ofrecieron un concierto donde la tónica fue la gritería ensordecedora, lo cual refleja que para las jóvenes siguen siendo sensuales y eternos adolescentes.

Durante dos horas, los chicos gringos cantaron lo mejor de su repertorio, sin una orquesta detrás de ellos, tan sólo con un diyéi, pistas y una poderosa consola, lo cual abarata costos, pero resta glamur, por decir lo menos.

Eso fue pecata minuta, pues desde la primera rola se marcó el tono para que cundiera el reino de los ademanes, de los apóstrofes. A cada movimiento seguían suspiros y alaridos, cuerpos de las asistentes balanceándose cachondonamente. Todo es válido en la oscuridad.

They’re all back, alright. The 90’s boyband spectacle – Backstreet Boys are having a reunion, courtesy of Oprah. Even Kevin Richardson will be there, who left the Backstreet Boys in 2006 to “move on… with his life”. Well, who would let Oprah down? New Kids and Backstreet Boys Manning Up for Joint Tour?!

Backstreet's back! And going on the road with New Kids on the Block!

The hip-to-be-square manbands are close to signing a deal with Live Nation Entertainment for a joint U.S. tour in 2011, perhaps as early as March, E! News has exclusively learned.

A source close to the negotiations describes the proposed tour as an Expendables-meets-boy band experience, referring to the action blockbuster starring many beefy stars of yore.

"The idea is to recreate the boy band phenomenon," says the source. "It will be the ultimate ladies' night out."

Not that this would be the first time that Backstreet Boys and NKOTB have shared the spotlight.

Backstreet, which is down to a quartet since the 2006 exit of eldest member Kevin Richardson, joined New Kids onstage in June at Radio City Music Hall for a big group "jam" on Backstreet's "I Want It That Way."

"As for TONIGHT'S Concert... BACKSTREET BOYS got my respect forever!" Donnie Wahlberg tweeted afterward.

Indeed, that's where the idea of a joint tour began to jell, our source recalls.

"The response was amazing," the source says. "It was a great night of music."

We hear that Live Nation is currently searching for a third band to join the tour, with Boyz II Men being at the top of the list, and that, even though New Kids and Backstreet have different management, representatives from both camps have already begun talking about recording a single together prior to a tour.

A Live Nation rep declined to comment.

BRITNEY SPEARS dropped in on the BACKSTREET BOYS before the band's show at the Pechanga casino in California on Friday night (25Jun10).

Spears, a longtime fan of the Everybody (Backstreet's Back) hitmakers, made an unannounced appearance backstage before the concert to greet the group.

She then joined the sold out crowd to cheer the pop stars on.

It has been quite a week for the boy band - they were joined onstage at New York City's Radio City Music Hall last weekend (19Jun10) by fellow ageing pop hunks New Kids on the Block.

Backstreet Boys Make the New Kids Fans Scream

Boy band fans got a tuneful surprise Saturday night at New York's Radio City Music Hall when the Backstreet Boys made a surprise appearance at the New Kids on the Block concert.

"You get two for the price of one tonight," Nick Carter told the screaming crowd.

The New Kids on the Block – Joey McIntyre, 37, Donnie Wahlberg, 40, Danny Wood, 41, and brothers Jordan, 40, and Jonathan Knight, 41 – were sitting in front of a white curtain bantering when they launched into the Backstreet Boys's 1999 hit "I Want It That Way," an hour into the concert.

As the audience began to sing, the curtain lifted, revealing the Backstreet Boys – Brian Littrell, 35, Nick Carter, 30, A.J. McLean, 32, and Howie Dorough, 36, who finished out the song.

Cue the deafening screams!

After the big reveal, the musicians embraced on stage, and both groups continued singing. Then the New Kids ceded the stage to the Backstreet Boys, who performed another number.

"I want to thank those guys right there," a gracious Littrell said. "They are our mentors. We've been fans of theirs for a long, long time."

After performing their 2002 song "Shape of My Heart" while perched on stools, the Boys left the stage with some protest – "Bring them back," screamed some fans! – only to reappear at the finale when the NKOTB performed "Hangin' Tough."

At the end of the show, all took a bow and jumped off the steps on the stage as green and white confetti and streamers rained down from the ceiling.

The Backstreet Boys joined New Kids On The Block on stage during a recent performance in New York.

According to Entertainment Tonight, both boybands took the stage at Radio City Music Hall to perform Backstreet Boys hit 'I Want It That Way'.

"I think this is definitely a special collaboration and timing is everything in showbusiness," New Kids member Joey McIntyre said.

Speaking about the Backstreet Boys' fans, New Kid Donnie Wahlberg added: "They have very loyal fans and we have very loyal fans, but I think looking at the few women who were sprinkled around during rehearsal, there was just a look that I haven't seen too often."

Brian Littrell and A.J. McLean chat about crazy encounters with groupies and supporting their gay fan base.

Though some might want to dismiss them as a mere boy band, the Backstreet Boys have sold more than 130 million albums in the last 17 years, making them one the biggest-selling groups of all time. With a recently released album, a summer tour, and their first BSB cruise on the way, we sat down with two of the group's members, Brian Littrell and A.J. McLean, to chat about growing out of the boy band label, insane groupie encounters, and supporting their gay fan base.

Out: I was reading a press release for This Is Us, and Brian, you said, "We made a conscious effort to go back to being ourselves." What were you before you went back to that, and what have you returned to?
Brian Littrell: I think, today, you will find that the Backstreet Boys are comfortable being who we are. There was a time when we were young men that we were trying to discover a sound that we wanted to have for the future. When you back up to after the Black and Blue CD, we took a little bit of time away. We came out with the Never Gone CD, which was a more pop/rock direction -- we kind of got away from what the Backstreet Boys are known for. In that turn of events, after Unbreakable, we were trying to get back to that dance-oriented music that people know us for. The pop, easy songs. Again, it's not rocket science, it's just easy-listening music that you want to move to. So in that, I think with This Is Us, you'll find that the Backstreet Boys, after 17 years together, we're comfortable being the Backstreet Boys, we're comfortable making music that is what it is. We do have a -- we call it some sort of "magical sound" that, when we all sing together, is something that is special that's lasted us for a long time. And you'll find that we're not trying to be anything that we're not. Like I said, it is what it is, and this is us.
A.J. McLean: Well said, well said.
Brian: [singing] Yeah, oh my God, we're here to stay. Brothers, sisters and this is A.J.

You have worked with some of the biggest producers in the industry, especially on the last album.
Brian: Like myself.
A.J.: Right.

So how do you make sure that you're not dwarfed by their contributions? How do you make sure in the end it's a Backstreet Boys' song and not a Red One song?
A.J.: Working with the producers that we've worked with -- like T-Pain, Jim Jonsin, Red One, Max Martin, again, Ryan Tedder -- they're all artists, as well. So they understand when we go in the studio that it is about the Backstreet Boys -- we are making a Backstreet Boys record. Not even once have we felt that any of the writers or producers were trying to one-up us. They're all just great guys to work with. We definitely would work with them all over again. And we now have a lot more creative control than we used to. Back in the day, when we first started, it was kind of like point and shoot. Now, we're the ones holding the gun, so to speak.
Brian: [gun shot noises]
A.J.: And we kind of call the shots. And say, "You know what? We don't really like that part, or I don't like that sound. Can we try this? Can we try that?" We even get more into the production side now, whether it's a keyboard sound, or a guitar lick, or whatever it is. We never used to do that before. It makes the recording process much more fun now than it ever was before.
Brian: It's funny, because when you go back to the beginning, the beginning times for the Backstreet Boys were about the success of the Backstreet Boys. And then there was a time when the industry kind of turned to who was writing, who was producing. And if you do go back, way back, on our second record -- that was our first record in the U.S. -- we even had songs that we were writing and producing at that time. I think, we talk about this term, "dwarfed by the producers," or, "how can we make it ours when we're the Backstreet Boys and we're working with somebody amazing," it's a good collaboration because we have many, many years in this business. And I think we're seasoned artists. A lot of times we're great writers that have been also overshadowed by our own success. And in that, when you really think about it, it's something to take in. And these producers know they are the guys that read the liner notes on the CD, and they know who wrote something, and they know who produced it. Working with great producers now, in today's world, it's all about who produced it and who wrote it, so it's kind of turned, but I think it'll get back to us again -- hopefully.

Tell me about this cruise you guys have coming up in December. It's already sold out.
Brian: [Makes cruise ship horn noises]
A.J.: Yup. The Backstreet Boys Cruise. It's the first of, hopefully, many. We'll see how the first one goes.
Brian: Carnival Cruise!
A.J.: A bunch of artists have been doing it. I know the New Kids did it. Rick Springfield did it.
Brian: Yeah! Go, Rick Springfield.
A.J.: It's just -- it's something that's more intimate for us to be with our fans. It's kind of a vacation for us, but not really. It's a vacation that involves work. But...
Brian: We're on a boat.
A.J.: So obviously, if we get a little stressed out, we can't just jump overboard. But...
Brian: Send in the chopper.
A.J.: Give me a dingy.
Brian: [Laughs]
A.J.: It's going to be fun. We're going to do a lot of personal stuff with our fans. Whether it's hosting a pool party or a casino night.
Brian: I ain't doin' that.
A.J.: Heck, it could be even bingo, who knows?
Brian: I ain't doin' that.
A.J.: And then we'll do a proper concert -- we'll have our dancers.
Brian: I ain't doin' that, either.
A.J.: But Brian won't be there.
Brian: [Laughs]
A.J.: It's just going to be fun. It's our very first time doing it. I'm not a big boat guy, so I'm a little leery about the boat part. I know it's a cruise, and they tell me that you don't feel it. But if I get it in my head that I'm feeling it, I'll be all, [singing "I Want it That Way"] "Tell me... [throw up noises]" I'm not trying to throw up on a fan, but, it should be fun.
Brian: [In the tune of "I Want it That Way"] Ain't nothing but a stomach ache [throw up noise].
A.J.: We start in Miami and then go down to Cozumel and end up in Key West and then back up to Miami.
Brian: It's fun; we've been talking about this cruise for like five or six years. It's actually now come to pass where we can say, "Hey, we're doing a cruise." So hopefully it'll turn into something that's a yearly charity event type thing that we could raise money for a great cause out there.

How do you guys feel about the term "boy band" being equated with the Backstreet Boys in 2010?
Brian: It blows.
A.J.: It sucks.
Brian: Yeah. [Laughs]
A.J.: You can call us a boy band -- we don't care. Back in the day, when we first started and we were over in Europe, we kind of were blindsided by the fact that we got thrown into this big melting pot of the boy band era. We were the only group really like us coming out of the U.S. So going over there, there was Take That and all those bands. And now, it makes us feel young again if you want to call us a boy band. I mean, you can call us a "man band," too. But we've always prided ourselves on just being a vocal harmony group. And we fought tooth and nail for the first, probably, five, six years of our actual career to claim that name. And now, if you wanna call us a boy band, call us a boy band. It's kind of cool -- it's retro.
Brian: It's cool, in a way, and also it sucks, on the other side. Because, to be honest with you, the label "boy band" or the facade of what people think boy bands are, you think of Backstreet Boys and, "Oh, yeah. They're like the king boy band of the 1990s." But, at the same time, there is a future, unfortunately for a lot of people out there, there is a future for the Backstreet Boys, and fortunately for a lot of fans that we have. We have another 17 years in us. There's more music to be made, there's more history, there's more events, there's more moments that we can share with our fans in the future, and, you know, someday that term will probably go away. Or it'll transfer to the Jonas Brothers. They didn't really call Boys II Men a boy band. It's a European term that we kind of got smashed with. But again, in the U.S., it's turned against us to try to be played on the radio today. In today's market world of radio, if you're not working with the right guy or you have the label that we have right now, people kind of run from it. So we're tryin' to change people's thought process on -- it's still good music, and it is what it is.

Perez Hilton is looking for the new big boy band. He's conducting a search with Simon Fuller right now.
Brian: It's not going to go away. [Laughs]

You're one of the biggest-selling boy bands in history. Do you still worry about competition? Where's your head at when you think about new bands?
A.J.: I think it's cool, in some aspects, that if another group does come out like us and does very well, it just opens the doors for us, as well as any other new artists, and even seasoned artists -- it kind of starts that whole pop explosion again. Look at the New Kids again, for example. I mean, they were gone for 15 years and came back, and it was like they were never gone. No pun intended on our end.
Brian: Never gone.
A.J.: But -- like what Brian said -- it's always going to be happening. People like Perez that are knee-deep in the media and in the public eye and know and have seen so many artists --
Brian: And have a huge influence --
A.J.: I think it's something great. Hopefully it's a good group and it does very well. We've been around for so long that, if we can even help, you know, in any way, to any new groups, and give them any kind of advice... We're always here to kind of give our side to what we've been through for 17 years. Obviously something's been working, if we've been doing it for so long, and we have such an amazing fan base.

What has been your most insane encounter with a fan?
A.J.: If we wrote a book about it, between the fans and tour life, it would be bigger than War and Peace. Some of the craziest things I can remember, we had a girl stow away on our tour bus. She was a girl that was actually trying to get to me. She had given me these two rings. I didn't think anything of it. Come to find out that they were both real, and that they were her parents' wedding rings and realized that she was in deep caca. And she just hopped on our bus and stowed away in a bunk. Our old manager was rummaging through his bunk and he felt a leg and was like, "What the hell?" We were like four hours away from the city that she hopped on the bus. We had to put her in a cab and send her back home.
Brian: We had gone, like, 200 kilometers, it was like...
A.J.: Yeah. We've had girls be sitting in our dressing room when we show up to a gig. We had these girls -- I think we were in Spain -- we walked into our dressing room and there's two girls with their jeans ripped, they're bleeding, they had jumped over a barbed-wire fence, and they're just sitting there. When they see you, they don't really know what to do because they're like, "Oh my God, you're really here." And then when it comes time for them to be asked to leave, that's when they put you in a choke hold, and they don't want to let it go. We've had girls jump on stage. We had a girl once, on the Millennium Tour, Brian tends to sing with his eyes closed a lot.
Brian: No I don't.
A.J.: This girl was just freaking. This girl was standing right in front of him when he opened his eyes, and she bumped the mic and hit him in the face.
Brian: We were singing "I'll Never Break Your Heart," and we were on the center of the stage where the center used to rise up in the middle, and it would turn around. And I was singing, "I'll never break..." and it was like, [makes sound of mic hitting him in the mouth]. My mic hits me right in the teeth, and my lip starts bleeding, and I'm like, "What the heck?" And I look up, and this girl's going, "Hruuuuh" [sound of inhaling horror], right in front of me. And our security guard, Marcus, about that time -- she'd timed it perfectly. I don't know how many shows she had seen to know right when the stage lifted up, because it separated from the rest and lifted up. So our security guard is trying to climb the ramp as the stage is lifting, and he can't even get up there, he's sliding down, and he's going, "Come here, girl! Come here, girl!" trying to get this girl off. And then she runs and gets Nick in the headlock, after she bashes my mic into my lip. So that was interesting.

We had another two girls. We always have a press schedule that we look at, or an e-mail that comes in, of the city that we're at and the stations that we're doing interviews at and who's working that day and who's doing press. I was backstage with my security guard getting ready to have dinner, and these two girls -- they were probably in their early 20s -- come walking down the ramp to the arena. And they had these huge press badges on that were laminated with their picture and all this stuff, and it says underneath it, "Makeup." And I was thinking -- I'm not shy in saying that when we do TV, or whatever, we try to get a little touch up so we look like we're young pop stars. But I knew on that day that we did not have any press, so we didn't have makeup that day. And these girls just walk right down and backstage, so I asked my security guard "Raul, why don't you run and check on those girls because we're not -- one, we don't have press today. Two, we're not doing makeup. And three, they don't belong back here." So he goes and gets them, and they're walking them out, and she's like, "Oh my God. We made these passes, and we love you." It was kind of one of those situations like A.J., where I was their favorite. And she was like, "We just want to meet you and say hello." So I ended up taking pictures with them, and I was like, "All right, you guys have to go." They get pretty smart, they get pretty smart. The older they get...
A.J.: Fans get really creative nowadays, especially with the Internet. They can burn a copy of a backstage pass, or whatever, which is also scary at the same time, cause we do have the occasional stalker-fan that, like, "I'll kill you and then kill myself." It's like, "Whoa. OK, you've got issues."
Brian: It's only music.

You guys have a lot of gay fans, too. When did you first realize that you had a gay following, and do you have any kind of relationship with your gay fans?
A.J.: I think, I mean...
Brian: I have gay friends...
A.J.: Years and years ago, especially over in Europe, it's funny, a lot of the boy bands, a lot of the members that were in a lot of those boy bands were actually gay, and it was just something that was normal over there. Doing a lot of these outdoor festival shows, you would see a lot of gay men and gay women just chanting and going for it. It kind of started over in Europe, and we did this show with Divine Brown years ago and it was during gay pride, and we were unaware of who she was, we had no idea -- I didn't put two and two together with her and the whole Hugh Grant thing. And, you know, it was amazing. We have a huge gay following -- it's awesome. I, personally, am trying to get more and more involved with the gay and lesbian movement, very much so. I've got quite a lot of gay friends back in L.A. No on Prop 8. It is a really huge market, and people are people, it doesn't matter what you believe. And we make our music for everyone, and whether you're gay, straight, black, white, it doesn't matter. Young or old.
Brian: Yellow or red.
A.J.: Music touches everyone, and if our music touches the gay community, I think it's awesome. I think it's absolutely brilliant. We're actually going to be doing the Gay Pride Parade in San Francisco. We are the Grand Marshals. We're going to perform -- it's before we do our show in San Francisco. So I'm looking forward to that -- we all are. It's going to be fun.
Brian: We are not here to judge, we are here to love.
A.J.: Absolutely.

Is there a song from your catalog that you hate or wish that you never had to perform again?
A.J.: There's one that is the general consensus of the group, and unfortunately this song was written by an absolutely amazing songwriter, Mutt Lange. But I think it was Mutt's approach to being a Max Martin–type song. It was called, "If You Want it to Be Good, Girl, Get Yourself a Bad Boy."
Brian: And that's one of the longest Backstreet Boys titles in history. Probably one of the...
A.J.: It was a political thing. Our record company was friends with him. They wanted the song on the record.
Brian: They managed him.
A.J.: Yeah. We were like, "No." We've never performed it live. It's actually in our show, now, as the end of Brian's video. We each do four individual films that we've been kind of CGI-ed into. I do Fight Club, Howie does The Fast and the Furious, Nick does The Matrix and Brian does --
Brian: Enchanted, the Disney --
A.J.: Enchanted. And at the end, when the dragon comes up, that song's playing. So that's the only way that song will ever get into any of our shows. Ever.
Brian: I always say, "If we were Shania Twain, then it would be cool." But we're not Shania Twain.
A.J.: Man, I feel like a woman. Like that? Yeah. That song sucks. It's horrible.

On the flip side, if you had to pick one song from your catalog that best describes the Backstreet Boys, or one that you think is most representative of your career so far, what would you pick?
A.J.: Let's not go with the predictable. Let's try something different. I would say, "I Want it That Way," but let's try something different. I don't know, because that's the one we always say, so I'm drawing a blank.
Brian: Well, I'm going to go with the new record, This Is Us, and go with the song called "Undone." It happens to be my favorite song on the record, and the Backstreet Boys are unfinished, we're undone. There are new memories, new things that we want to do. So for the future, I would go with that. But for the typical, boy band label, I would have to say we'll probably still go down in history for "I Want it That Way."

From where Backstreet Boys Nick Carter is standing, things are looking pretty good. Concerts on the act's tour -- as well as copies of its greatest-hits collection, "Playlist: The Very Best of Backstreet Boys" -- are selling briskly. Now if he could only persuade radio to play songs from Backstreet Boys' latest album, "This Is Us," everything would be perfect. "It's sad that people aren't getting the chance to hear it much," Carter said. "But that's cool. All we have to do is go on tour and promote it that way." Backstreet Boys, who recently joined Korn in boycotting BP oil, are on tour through July in support of the album. During a tour stop in Boston, Carter took the time to talk to SoundSpike about the performances, the upcoming Backstreet Boys cruise and his tour bus.

SoundSpike: How's the tour going so far?

Nick Carter: The tour is going fantastic. We're having a lot of fun. From what we're seeing from the stage, it's kind of sold out. [Laughs] We're kind of excited. Everybody's excited. I'm on a bus right now -- and isn't Kid Rock from Detroit? I have Kid Rock's bus. There's a big D everywhere on my bus for Detroit. [Laughs]

What can we expect from the tour?

What you can expect is we have four dancers in our show. We have a great, cool production. There's LEDs everywhere. We also have four different movies that we basically superimpose ourselves into. There's acting with all the great songs we've done -- "Quit Playing Games" to "Backstreet's Back" to "As Long As You Love Me." They're songs that people might know from that era. We're dancing like crazy. It's energetic and a lot of fun.

I give you credit for being able to dance for hours on end like that.

It is definitely tough at certain times but we're all in good shape. We're in really good shape.

You must be proud of "This is Us." It's a great record.

We're super proud of it. We're super proud. We feel this is a coming of age. It's us back again.

Is that where the name came from?

Basically, yeah. We feel we came full circle and we feel it best represents the group from old to new. It's a great record overall.

It must be tough to know that people aren't hearing it as much on the radio.

Overall, the fact is we're still able to get on stage and enjoy the music that we do and enjoy performing it. We enjoy it just as much as the fans do. It's a great exchange.

Like previous albums, you worked with some great songwriters and producers on "This is Us." Who did you learn the most from?

We definitely learned a lot from Max Martin and a lot from all those producers in the past. We've worked with so many amazing producers -- from Rodney Jerkins to Mutt Lange to Max Martin to Jim Jonsin to [OneRepublic's] Ryan Tedder. You name it, we worked with almost every single big producer on this planet, from the pop perspective. We've taken a little bit from every single one of them.

When you were working on the greatest-hits album, "Playlist: The Very Best of Backstreet Boys," did it surprise you the number of hits Backstreet Boys have produced?

It's a little overwhelming at times. You look back and say, "Wow. We've had seven albums." I personally feel like it's our first album.

Why is that?

Just because. I feel like we're having so much fun. I'm always looking forward to the future and not what we've done in the past and reminiscing. I'm not living in the past. I'm trying to figure out what's next.

Have you started working on new material?

Yes, we have.

How far into the process are you?

We are probably just a couple songs into it right now. The tour's taking up a lot of our time. Once we're done with that, then we'll really put the pedal to the metal.

What can you tell me about the Backstreet Boys Cruise that starts on Dec. 9?

Basically, this cruise that we are doing is -- I think it's [a] Carnival Cruise. You get a chance to buy a ticket and you go on a cruise. You get to see our show on one of the nights. We put on the same show that has taken us all over the world performing to 20,000 seats in London, 50,000 in Japan. It's the same magnitude of show, but on a cruise line.

It must be kind of unnerving knowing that you're going to be with all of your fans on a ship, where there's easier access.

It's definitely a little tense thinking about it. At the end of the day, we've got security, so we're going to be fine.

How do you feel Backstreet Boys have grown musically over the years?

We've grown in so many different aspects as writers and producers, and then also from listening to songs and knowing good songs that we want to put on our album. We know you have to have a good ear to know what you've got to release, in order to keep that career going. There have been so many groups in the past who probably didn't have a lot of success because they didn't know how to A&R their albums.

The numbers speak for themselves: The Backstreet Boys have sold more than 130 million albums, released 24 singles and are now in the middle of their ninth tour. The pop act’s 2007 album, Unbreakable, is aptly named, especially when it comes to Brian Littrell. The 35-year-old singer was born with a heart defect, which has required him to undergo several surgeries over the years. In 2008, his son Baylee was diagnosed with atypical Kawasaki disease, which causes an inflammation of the arteries. And this past October, Littrell had to cancel several shows and appearances after being diagnosed with swine flu. Littrell called City Link from his Atlanta home May 14 while recovering from another minor surgery. The resilient crooner with the slight Southern accent was in good spirits, even breaking into a pitch-perfect verse of “I Want It That Way.”

What has it been like being on the road again?

[This Is Us, Backstreet's latest album] came out in October of last year. So the This Is Us tour started in November of last year over in Europe. We did all of Europe last fall and winter. Then, we did Southeast Asia, Australia, Japan and now, we’re kicking off the U.S. leg of the tour. In August, we’ll be in Canada and in November, we’re talking about South America. It only takes us 12 or 14 months to get around the whole world, but we’re excited to be touring back home. It’s definitely a nice, rewarding thing to be able to tour in your home country.

You guys had taken a little hiatus. Was there ever a time you thought the Backstreet Boys would never tour again?
To be honest with you, there was a time after the Black and Blue tour had ended where we did take a break. We were all kind of searching for who we wanted to become — not only as individuals but as a group, as well. We had been touring for nine or 10 years straight at that time and really busting our butts and making a name for ourselves. But then, when you make a name for yourself, you kind of sit back and say, “OK, now what do we do?” There was a time when we were in a growing-pain type of environment, where we were going in separate directions as individuals. But now, I think our differences bring us together instead of tear us apart. We’re a lot older now. We’ve been together for 17 years and we’re also good friends. We’re loyal to one another and we care for one another in the fact that we’re all helping each other continue to be successful. And the fans are attributed to that.

What has been the wildest thing a fan has done to get backstage?
We were somewhere in Europe, and I was backstage with my security guard getting ready to go have dinner. And I knew on the schedule we have a daily outline of the things we have to do for work that day. Press is typically on it, but I knew that day we didn’t have anything on the schedule for press. I was headed to dinner with my security guard and along come these two girls that are walking down the ramp to the back of the arena. They had these huge press passes on. They were these crazy, big laminated press passes and another pass with their picture IDs on it, which were laminated, as well. And they walked right by me and they kind of stopped. They weren’t speaking English, so I was wondering if they were gonna stop and talk to me or not. But they walked really slowly by me and I saw their press badge said “makeup” on it.

Were you expecting a makeup artist?
Sometimes, when we do TV, we try to look as pretty as we possibly can. We get our dark circles taken out. We are a bunch of guys but we tell all the secrets. It’s no big deal. So we get a little powder or something to look presentable on TV. They said they were doing makeup for press. So I had my security guard start to question them. Well, they made these passes, got backstage, walked all the way to the dressing room and nobody stopped them or asked them anything. I ended up signing autographs for them and taking pictures. It was pretty funny. That’s kind of going all out.

Your fans have been known to form flash mobs in the streets of Italy and Peru. What’s the farthest a fan has gone to get your attention?
There have been people who have broken in and then, they’re sitting in our dressing room waiting for us. That happened in Germany. There were these girls wearing really ripped-up jeans sitting on our sofa in the dressing room. We walked in and they kind of gasped for air screaming, “Oh, my God, it’s the Backstreet Boys.” Their legs were literally bleeding. We asked them how they got in there and why they were bleeding and they said, “Oh, we jumped the fence and broke in.”

You had a No. 1 song on the Christian charts after releasing your first solo CD, Welcome Home, in 2006. Will you do another Christian album?
I grew up singing in church as a little boy and I always wanted to do contemporary Christian music. That’s really what I thought I’d do with my life. I am in the process of working on my sophomore CD. It’s been one of the most rewarding things in my life other than being a parent, because it’s close to my heart. A lot of people don’t know that I had a vocal scholarship presented to me in the early ’90s to a Bible college in Cincinnati and I passed up on that to be a Backstreet Boy in 1993. Little did I know, we’d still be here 17 years later and actually have made a career out of being a boy band. But I knew when I got the chance, I’d step out on my own two feet and do some contemporary Christian music because that was always where I thought my path was to go.

So are you psyched about embarking on your first Backstreet Boys Cruise?
Yes, that’s in December of this year. We’ve been trying to put together a cruise probably for five years. It was one of our original ideas that many managers in the past have taken other groups to do before us. I’ve never even been on a cruise before. I was joking with fans on Twitter that I’ll probably be wearing a life jacket the whole time. My wife has never gone on one either. I’m going to take my wife and my son and some family members and close friends. We’ll kind of be trapped on the boat. I’m a little worried about that. I can’t go anywhere. I may have to call a chopper. Just kidding. It’s going to be fun.

The Kids on the Block Cruise left Miami May 14. Is your band friends with any of the other boy bands, such as NKOTB or ‘NSYNC?
We’re acquaintances. The only ones I can say we’re really more than acquaintances with is Joey Fatone from ‘NSYNC. He and I have hung out several times over the years. He’s just a lovable guy and there’s not one bad thing you could say about him. He makes everybody feel like they’re special. Justin [Timberlake] is pretty much the same way. We’ve hung out. He invited me to his solo show here in Atlanta before, and I hung out backstage with him. I call him a kid because he’s younger than I am. He’s extremely talented. I’d love to still play some golf with him. We haven’t been able to get that on the schedule. From the New Kids standpoint, I can’t really say that I know any of those guys. I have exchanged some e-mails with Donnie [Wahlberg] several times in the past.

Was your band ever in competition with the other boy bands?
There’s enough room for everybody. There was always a big competition between ‘NSYNC and us that was really kind of created by the press years ago. Who was bigger? Who was better? Who was gonna sell more? When you look back to all the groups in the history in the pop world, there’s always somebody that’s the next best thing and life goes on. Now, it’s Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato. Disney cranks ‘em out left and right.

Are you expecting to see familiar faces in the crowd during this tour?
To see people’s faces whether you’re 29 or 35 or 40 is still great. Maybe you’re 18 and your older sister loved us when you were in grade school, but you didn’t really care then but want to come to a show now. The longer we stay around, there are more guys that come out to our shows and say, “Hey, we like the Backstreet Boys now.” When they were 18 and all their girlfriends were jamming to “I Want It That Way,” they pretended they didn’t like it. What’s great about getting older, and we all are, is that now it’s cool because they’re married and have kids and can say, “Yeah, I like that song.”

Is this where we make the "Backstreet's back" quip?

Let's not. It's way overused, not to mention possibly inaccurate. Nick Carter says the Backstreet Boys never went away — even if you didn't notice. For 17 years the group has toiled to stay alive. They've sold more than 100 million albums. They've been golden boys and guilty pleasures. They lost a member and continued as a foursome. Their latest album, This Is Us, came out in 2009. The Backstreet Boys are back (fine) on a world tour, stopping at Ruth Eckerd Hall on Memorial Day.

Carter, the teen idol who grew up in Apollo Beach and Ruskin, is now 30. He has navigated addiction, screamy reality TV and industry scandal, but says he's in a good place. He called from home in Nashville to talk about the tour and his favorite Tampa memories (RIP, stadium Bennigan's). And if Justin Bieber loyalists don't appreciate his music, he's content to count their moms as fans.

Do you still keep a house in Tampa Bay?

I don't, but when I get some time, I'm going to go look again in Tierra Verde. That's one of my favorite places.

What was it like growing up here?

My experience there was amazing. I have so many friends there. Tampa's my home. I'm a huge, die-hard Buccaneer fan. On my Twitter, I have the Bucs flag as my picture. I'm kind of a fanatic. I'm a little crazy, you know?

What about the Rays?

I'm down with all Tampa teams. I love the Rays, too.

How is the tour going?

The show itself is probably one of the best we've ever put on. It gets really big. We've got four girl dancers, a lot of people on stage. The new music, the new record, it's dance pop. … It's basically what we've done over the years. Anyone that comes to the show is going to get an opportunity to go in a time warp and enjoy the '90s again.

Are you playing more intimate venues in America?

There are some places that are bigger and some places that are smaller. The show is designed for an extremely big place. We just did Asia and we were playing 20,000 seats a night. We were playing 20,000 in Europe. We had to take smaller venues in the states. (Overseas) they're not afraid of pop music and boy bands.

How is it different touring now than 10 years ago?

I think it's more fun because, think about it, there are a lot of groups out there who probably wish that they could still be doing what we're doing, and they just can't because they gave up or they didn't believe in what they were doing or they moved on in life, and they're all sitting back and home and fat and we're in shape. We're out on the road and dancing and we're healthy and singing music and entertaining, and they're probably all kicking themselves in the butt. We stayed the course. It's been 17 years solid. It's almost like we're the pop version of the Rolling Stones.

How do you feel about teen pop stars like Justin Bieber?

We were there. We were doing the same thing and now we're in our own zone, our own generation. Their kids are into these new artists and their parents are going, "We had a pop band, too. We liked the Backstreet Boys." Now they're probably going to rediscover us again. That's kind of how it goes in life. When they rediscover us, they'll realize, wait a minute, it's not just nostalgia. It's not just old music. There's a new album out that's amazing.

What surprises you?

To this day, seeing all these fans coming to the shows. You see so many people coming still and it's like, man, they don't get enough. I guess they realize how great of entertainers we are. To be a Backstreet Boys fan is taboo. In some way, they like that. They like being a part of something special.

Together almost 20 years, Backstreet Boys Nick Carter, Howie Donough, Brian Littrell and AJ McLean have sold more than 76 million records worldwide.

But while probably still best known for their successes in the late 1990s, the band is not standing still.

As they kick off their 37-stop tour of the U.S. and Canada, AJ McLean took time to talk with the Sun Herald recently about what the band is up to and what fans can expect when they appear at the IP in Biloxi on June 4.

What’s life on the road like? Do you love it or hate it?
Life on road, it’s kind of a love-hate relationship. I love what I do, it’s all I know, and I absolutely love being on stage. I love to perform for people. But now you know, I’m getting older, I got engaged, I am starting a life of my own. It’s different — I’ve got my own house, my dogs, and when I’m on the road for too long, it gets a little hard.

When I’m home, I enjoy being in my house. I don’t want to go out. I just veg at my house, work out, play video games and write music, really.

When I’m on the road, I try to take the crew out for golf, or dinner, or do things like that. I’ve really gotten back into photography as a hobby.

I’ll get up in the morning, go out and walk around, especially if it’s a place I haven’t been to before or a place I’ve been to but not really seen, and take my camera, look around, take random pictures of random people and cool stuff. I’d like to put together a coffee table book or something like that.

What’s next for the Backstreet Boys? Another album?
We are going back into the studio in September to work on the next record and we have some pretty big surprises for that — which we can’t talk about just yet, but I’m sure after say, the (June 8) Boston show, people will have an idea about that.

Hmm, that’s cryptic, could it be a collaboration, perhaps?

Possibly….

Or maybe a new sound?

Maybe a little bit of both. We’ve just started talking about what direction we want the next record to go in. You know when you continue to grow, obviously our (fan) demographic now is 25-45, we’re a little older, they’re a little older.

Granted, we still have a lot young people who come to our shows, but our core audience is older, so probably leaning toward a little more of a grown-up sound, maybe a little Eagles-ish. We’re trying to keep that longevity going, permanently putting our feet in the ground and saying, we’re here today, coming up on 20 years, and it’s good.

Who are your influences these days, who are you listening to?
The Temper Trap, One Republic, Muse — a little of everything. I go online and seeing who’s new.
I’m a bit obsessed right now with the one kid, I don’t know his name, the kid that just got the record deal with Ellen DeGeneres, who did Paparazzi. He is sick, he’s amazing. I’m sure we are all gonna know his name soon.

But I’m all over the board. My iPod is all over the map, everything from Enya to Nine Inch Nails to a lot of old Johnny Cash.

It’s crazy, and I try to bring all the sounds I listen to, to bring it into the studio. So if there’s a song that one of us writes, and we listen to it, one of us might say, you know, I see that going more Johnny Cash, or more Prince, or whatever.

When you come together, and you all have your own perspectives, does that mean you have to compromise, you know how they say a compromise means nobody’s happy, or is there a common thread?
Definitely with the rest of the guys there is a common ground. We all have very eclectic selection on our iPods. Like Brian listens to everything from Frank Sinatra to rock and roll, …Black Sabbath, whoever, and that’s why we have a unique sound, because we all bring different elements to the table and we find the common ground.

So what can folks expect when you come to the IP? Is it very different from the old style?
It’s very different from the old stuff. About 85 percent of the show is dancing, start to finish, straight music start to finish, there’re no breaks. We don’t have a band this time; we have four female dancers and a DJ. One of my favorite parts of the show are the four films that we taped and transposed ourselves into — I’m in “Fight Club” and “The Matrix,” Brian’s in the “Enchanted,” Howie’s in “Fast & Furious” — we utilize those films for quick change time, and we changed the dialogue so it’s really funny, and really cool.

It’s a really well-rounded show — we do about three quarters of the new CD, and every one of the “Chapter 1 Greatest Hits”.

Be prepared for an absolutely amazing kick-a-- show, and thanks for all the love and support for all the years.

We are anxious to come to Biloxi for this show — bring the whole family out and get ready for two hours of entertainment.

The BACKSTREET BOYS have parted ways with their longtime record label after 16 years on the roster.

The boy band signed to Jive Records in 1994 and released seven albums through the label over the years.

They have now announced their departure from Jive in a post on their official website, titled "Freedom", which dismisses rumours they were dumped from the books because of falling album sales.

The post reads, "So the news is out! The Backstreet Boys are no longer signed to long time record label Jive Records. The amicable split is very exciting for the group. "

Bandmember Brian Littrell adds, "This is the best thing, at the best time that could have ever happened for us. We are confident in the future of our band, and are looking forward to the new things to come. 2011 is going to be a great year for us."

A.J. Mclean secretly shudder before the upcoming cruise fan of his band Backstreet Boys - because he suffers from seasickness. The boyband will be in December (10) as part of a Carnival Cruise-action host a four-day cruise to celebrate their most loyal fans, the singer and fears that he will be the bulk of the trip in bathroom. McLean: "I go for the first time on cruise ships ... I can not tolerate not good. I know it's a huge ship and you do not want to be seasick, but I know myself. I am a hypochondriac." The cruise begins on 9 December (10) in Miami and goes to Mexico and Key West in Florida.

Backstreet Boys Warn Lady Gaga To Watch Her Finances On 'The Bonnie Hunt Show'

It seems like these days everyone is worried about Lady Gaga. Janet Jackson and Ryan Tedder have both warned Gaga that she may need to slow down a little before she burns herself out. And, when the MTV Newsroom's favorite boy band Backstreet Boys stopped by "The Bonnie Hunt Show" on TWednesday (April 14) to hang out and have a little fun (which they did), they wanted to share some of their music industry wisdom with the superstar.

"I think we were actually in New Zealand where Lady Gaga was," Brian Littrell recalled. "The reason I mention Lady Gaga because our production manager was talking to her production manager. I wanted to tell her when you over budget yourself [for a tour], you come home broke."

Nick and the guys joked that the man in the group who is the money honey is Howie "Trump Jr." Dorough. Nick added that the guys had to learn all on their own how to handle their finances. "We had to learn ourselves. Who needs a two million dollar video anymore?" he joked about the band's high-tech "Larger Than Life" clip. "We learned along the way and the only people we could trust was ourselves. We can't tell people out there what to do."

With that more serious topic out of the way, the guys shared photos of their kids (Howie and Brian have babies — adorable ones!) and even shared what they do when they hit the road, joking that most of the time all that they can do is hang out with each other, even on days when that doesn't seem like the best idea. Brian laughed, "We don’t always wake up on the right side of the bed."

Lucky for us BSB fans that guys did perform their track, "Bigger," off their album This Is Us. Was it amazing? Why yes. Yes it was.

The Romanov Red Rock in India concert that featured Prime Circle, Richard Marx and the Backstreet Boys saw many a Delhi teenager and parent hovering around waiting for the show to start. Prime Circle began the show but the concert picked up only when the still great looking Marx took the stage. “You guys are a great audience but it is so funny to see you scream and shout during the song and then fall silent,” chuckled Marx, 47, before he launched into one of his biggest soulful hits, Hazard. That was a particularly high point in the concert, older members of the audience who remembered the song about a boy and girl dreaming about leaving their small town in Nebraska. Some lighters went up as Marx crooned out the chorus. He also saved his most famous song for the last: “This is a song I don’t want you to sing aloud because you all know it and you might just ruin it,” he joked before playing the opening chords of Right Here Waiting for You. Teenage couples held each other as their parents frowned from a distance, arms waved and voices rose in unison to sing with Marx.

But there was a different kind of energy in the air after Marx exited, one that became agitated as the stage was cleared and a DJ set up his console. The four remaining Backstreet Boys appeared on stage in the midst of chants and began a high voltage, hour-long performance, replete with their signature dance moves, short video spoofs, accompanied by a bevy of sexy female dancers. The boy band began with their signature Backstreet’s Back , swiftly moving onto their early chartbusters. . Although they’re older now, wrinkled and still as auto-tuned as before, the concert was a hit. “Thank you for being there for us for so many years,” they cried in unison. Brian Littrell had a close shave with what looked like underwear thrown from the crowd on stage. On closer inspection, it was a fancy tie-up bandanna. Probably a fan’s response to his voice going out of tune when he sang solo.

SAME HEART, DIFFERENT SHAPE: THE BACKSTREET BOYS SHINE AGAIN

(November 29, 2000) -- In the modern music business, it is very rare for an artist to meet the expectations set by themselves, fans and the media for a new album. The Backstreet Boys not only meet but also exceed all expectations with their newest album.

“Black and Blue,” released last Tuesday, is the much anticipated third and best album so far by the Backstreet Boys. It is destined to sell by the millions, not just because so many fans have to have it, but because along with entirely original melodies and hooks, it is truly a showcase of the musical talent and special abilities the Backstreet Boys are contributing to the music world.

The first single, “Shape of My Heart,” was a perfect preview of the emotion and rare talent of the entire album.

The opening track and second single, “The Call”, is an interesting story about a guy who cheats on his girlfriend. While many artists’ attempts at incorporating a Latin flare to their songs fall short, this song contains a creative use of a guitar and castanets with the raspy lead vocals of AJ McLean and Nick Carter, adding to the bad boy image of the character in the song.

As doubtful critics gear up for another round of “they didn’t write the songs” invectives, BSB proves them wrong with seven self-contained works, all of which, are flawlessly written and sung.

One of the uplifting and perhaps one of the best songs they’ve ever done is “The Answer to Our Lives,” which was entirely written and produced by the Boys. The lyrics are inspirationallives (“it’s up to you and me/ to face our destiny”) and the sound is entirely original.

Howie Dorough wrote the last track “How Did I Fall In Love With You,” a warm, heartfelt ballad about a guy falling in love with his best girl friend. Anything but a mushy-gushy love song, it is accompanied by a piano and string orchestra playing softly in the background.

If you listen closely, you can hear every Boy’s voice in the perfected harmonies, in addition to Howie’s sweetly promising and Brian Littrell’s velvety pure voices. This song is sure to win over any rock or anti-pop supporters.

Showcasing their originality further, the Backstreet Boys do something no other artist has ever done: they give thanks to their fans in the form of the song “Everyone.” A concert in itself, it describes every exhilarating second of a Backstreet Boys performance and reminds the fans that they will never forget everything the fans have contributed to their success. This song is sure to please all of the old fans and gain tons of new ones.

Perhaps one of the most moving parts of “Black and Blue” is in the booklet, where Brian, in a prayer, asks God to “…bless our fans and may they be touched in a special way.” Little things like these tell music fans everywhere that not all entertainers are in it for fame and money and that their part is always important to the artist.

At the end of the day, the charm and charisma of “Black and Blue” is reflected in one thing: how dramatically different it is from the rest of the mold. Sure, any five people can join together and call themselves singers, but it takes every bit of the dedication, effort, individuality and extraordinary abilities each of the Backstreet Boys contributes to the group.

The special range and texture in each groupmate’s voice coming together with the rest creates a never-before-heard sound that’s sure to inspire and amaze anyone. “Black and Blue” is meant to change people everywhere; it has the potential to make the shyest dancers jump on the dance floor and the coldest hearts melt down to the drop.

So listen to it and see if you’re not ditching the troubled relationship (“Not For Me”) or proposing with a song (“Yes, I Will”).

What keeps the BSB together?

The Backstreet Boys’ A.J. McLean and Howie Dorough say their recent show at the Araneta Coliseum is a sign that they are going back to traditional melodies.

MANILA, Philippines - The Backstreet Boys have changed — make that matured. They’re no longer the bubble kind of group who thrilled to the mass hysteria their hit songs (e.g. I’ll Never Break Your Heart, Shape of My Heart, etc.) generated in one country after another.

Most of the guys have gotten married or are about to and have started their own families.

“Some of the guys bring their own families with them,” says A.J. McLean. “Our fans are older themselves and bring their own families with them.”

Their fans no longer see Howie Dorough as the heartthrob of yesteryear but as loving father and devoted husband whose appeal lies in his being just like one of them.

A.J. himself admits he’s getting married next year and will soon “join the club.”

But that doesn’t diminish their stature one bit. In fact, it enhances their image as human beings who practise what they preach in all those love songs the group popularized through the years.

“When we were younger, things were hysterical,” recalls A.J. “They put us on the pedestal. But now we’re on the same page. People are bringing in their husbands and wives (to the shows).”

Still, he knows there’s a Backstreet Boys fan in schools, parties and other places where young people gather.

After all, the energy they showed in their concert at Araneta Coliseum last Saturday night has never waned. It was one big party where the dancing and feet stomping never stopped.

The group adjusted to the times by bringing in a DJ and a couple of female dancers. They also changed costumes six times, the better to keep concert goers’ eyes on stage.

In keeping with the movie theme of the show, each member came representing a film. A.J., for instance, represented The Fight Club.

The music, they promised, is back to basics.

“It’s back to the sounds our fans like: Pop, R&B, ballads, organic sound,” explains A.J.

It’s the kind of music their fans fell in love with, as far as some 17 years ago, when the band members were just teenagers and started making a name for themselves.

Those years were not a walk in the park, states A.J. Like all fledgling bands, they had their share of “not knowing what was gonna happen” before they cut their first record deal in 1996.

“We were just traveling around the US and playing in middle school. It was not an overnight success,” relates A.J.

They look at hot boy bands like JLS and see the eagerness, the love of music that catapulted them to the top.

“We met JLS and see ourselves in them when we were just starting, except that at 20, they’re older than us when we were starting,” adds A.J.

Now that Backstreet Boys are nearing their 20th year in the business, their only advice to other bands is to practice patience.

“The music industry right now is fickle. It’s constantly changing. It will actually become worse before it becomes better,” warns A.J.

The group doesn’t feel daunted at all. Out of every crisis, there lurks an opportunity. And so they’re trying to make the best of it.

Now, they feel, is the best time to go out of their comfort zone and experiment on their music.

“Our album, Never Gone, is our biggest experiment,” says A.J.

The album, which they are also promoting in the country, is no longer just dance grooves and upbeat tempo. Here, the boys go back to the good old melodies that make ballads and R&B songs so popular.

“It’s back to the traditional sounds, to something more organic,” A.J. describes the band’s latest studio release.

The guts to leave their comfort zone reflects a confidence borne out of 17 years of success.

“We don’t have to do it for the money,” Howie reveals. Instead, they do it because “It’s great to work hard at something, not only for ourselves but for our fans.”

Along the way, Howie — and the rest of the group, also composed of Brian Littrell and Nick Carter — discover the joy of working with others.

Howie, for his part, found working with Sarah Geronimo in a duet “simply amazing.”

“We allow each other to collaborate with other artists,” says A.J.

But this doesn’t mean they will give in to the temptation of disbanding when a good offer comes along.

“Who knows,” Howie thinks aloud, “We may even come up with Backstreet Boys 2, this time made up of our children.”

A.J. chimes in, “But my fiancée and I are planning to have a baby girl.”

The Backstreet Boys Are…Back

Backstreet's back, alright! Oh yeah!

The Backstreet Boys are swarming on the summer touring scene to embark on a North American headlining tour, which kicks of June 1 in Orland, Florida. The tour aligns itself with the release of This Is Us, the band's forthcoming studio album, which is their seventh. Everybody squeal!

The band, who've sold over 100 million albums in nearly 20 years of backstreetin', will appear on The Bonnie Hunt Show on April 14, debuting their new single, "Bigger." The band, featuring Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and AJ McLean—also announced the inaugural Backstreet Boys Cruise, a four-day fan appreciation event that will set sail December 9, departing from Miami, Florida and sailing through Key West and Cozumel. As if that weren’t enough, cruisers – don't even go there!- will be treated to special full performances by the group, Q&A sessions, game show activities, photo sessions with the guys and much more. It's all the BSB that fans could ever want! Since the event occurs around the holidays, now you know exactly what to get the BSB fan in your life for Christmas.

The Backstreet Boys will also host an exclusive and intimate evening in Napa Valley, California on April 11. The special, 8-song acoustic set will take place at The Napa Valley Opera House.

Korean online mag MK25 recently conducted an interview with the Backstreet Boys. During the interview, a topic that came up was, “How much do you know about Korea. An artist that has caught your attention.”

Nick Carter answered:

“Ah, out of Korean artists, I know a group called Big Bang. Whether it’s their music or fashion style, all of it seems very cool and charismatic. Especially, leader G-Dragon’s fashion sense and style, I think it’s sensational.”

From TVXQ to Big Bang, the Backstreet Boys are slowly but surely catching onto k-pop.

The BACKSTREET BOYS are following in the footsteps of boyband NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK by performing a concert cruise.

The Step by Step hitmakers put on a three-day boat trip around the Cari bbean last May (09). The high seas thrill featured performances from the group and special meet-and-greet sessions for fans onboard.

And now the Backstreet Boys are cruising to treat their loyal followers to a similar trip.
The four-day trip will set sail from Florida on 9 December (10). It wil l include a show and themed parties.

A post on the band's website reads, "This is going to be a once-in-a-li fetime experience that the boys will embark on and share with you, the fa ns.

"Some of the fun things on tap are: an intimate performance by the Back street Boys, Q&A, Photo Session, Deck Party and Beach Party. All events a re hosted by the Boys."
