Brian's New Song

Brian's New Song - Backstreet boy Brian Littrell returns to spiritual roots
Once upon a time pop ruled the world.

Recently, Littrell found himself in Toronto, without his fellow BSB-ers. Why should his fans care?

"If they are at all interested in the Backstreet Boys and me in particular, if they're at all interested in how I got my start and my first love of music, you will find it in this record," he says, talking about his solo effort - Welcome Home.

Littrell says it's a mixture of contemporary Christian, gospel and pop/rock music and describes it as inspiring and uplifting.

"I hope they respect the fact I'm willing to stick my neck out and stand up for what I believe in," he adds.

The album brings Littrell full circle. Right before fame came calling he was about to go to the University of Cincinnati Bible College on a four-year vocal scholarship.

"So starting off in contemporary Christian music was my beginning and I always wanted to go back to it as a solo artist," he says.

But just because he's gone off on his own doesn't mean he has forgotten the group that made him famous. He's not turning his back on BSB just yet.

"They're good friends of mine," he says about the rest of the group. "We spent some of the best years of our lives together, and we're already back in the studio making another CD. Music is nothing but probably everything that we do in our lives. We're proud of that and honoured to have fans all over the world."

The Backstreet Boys will face this recording session as a four, not five, member act. Littrell's cousin, Kevin Richardson, has left their world behind.

"He's chosen to hang up his cleats as a Backstreet Boy, and I'm okay with that. I'm a little disappointed, but I'm okay with his decision. If that's what he wants for his life I don't want to make him do something that he doesn't want to do," he says.

Wait a minute! Britney's life looks like a tabloid train wreck, Justin has left his Michael Jackson-esque squeals behind and the BSB are down to four members! Are these all signs of the pop apocalypse?

"Just because one of us decides to stop doesn't mean all of us have to stop," Littrell says quickly about the future of Backstreet. "I feel there's an obligation there to continue to make music, and I love making music as a Backstreet Boy.

"I love making music as a solo artist. I love being able to go to work every day and do something that I'm so passionate about and that I care about. If Kevin is finished with that time in his life, I have to respect that."
