The interview consists of two big parts, former was the interview taken on the 31st July in the backstage of the SOUL POWER TOKYO SUMMIT held at Nippon Budokan hall and the latter was done on the 3rd Augst in the studio after recording of "It Still Matters."
Howie was first asked about how this collaboration was started.
He told that Yoichi Kitagawa appeared as a guest to his DLF charity event held in 2006. Howie talked with Yoichi and they both love to do some collaboration in the future.
Then, Howie sent lots of songs he'd written to the Gospellers. They picked several songs from among those songs and finally chose "It Still Matters."
The actual procedure's Been completed within these six months.
He enjoyed singing "No one else comes close" with the Gospellers on the stage of SOUL SUMMIT. The audience was great! He couldn't hear his ear monitor without increasing its volume. The Gospellers had covered the song before and understood it very well.
Howie told that the Gospellers members reminded him the BSB members. Yoichi reminded him of AJ.
Howie and the Gospellers needed a translator when disucussing the recording in detail. But they didn't need translation as far as music concerned. Even the translator was surprised telling "Oh, it seems to me that you guys don't need translation!"
He'd like to invite all the Gospellers members as guests when he holds next DLF event in Tokyo.
Then he was asked about his BSB activities and business activities.
I suppose that this part contains information which is familiar to you LDners.
He told that he loved creating music, of course but also loved travelling. Meeting with people, eating the local food, knowing cutures, etc. gave him pleasure.
He told that he was always busy, but he enjoyed his life filled with lots of things to be done.
He didn't remember exactly how many times he'd Been in Japan. Anyway, he has Been in Japan about 8 to 9 times so far.
he talked about the recording of "It still Matters" with the Gospellers.
He told that it was one of the greatest experiences he had. He first concerned about the recording since it was the first recording with the Gospellers and there might be a difference between the recording process between them. According to Howie, the respective Gospellers members were always expressing their views about their solo parts and harmonizing parts of the song in an unselfish manner. They added new ideas to the song during recording. Howie told the BSB mostly depended on the producers when recording. He found the Gospellers' style was really creative and cooperative.
They produces the records and creates harmonies.
Howie told that BSB also created their own harmonies during recording, but in terms of production, the Boys depended on the producers. This was the biggest difference between the Gospellers and the BSB.
Howie told that "It Still Matters" was originally written by Howie and Gonzo (who was a half Japanese) six years ago for the BSB!!
The English lyrics of "It Still Matters" were written by Howie and the Japanese lyrics were translated and arranged by Yoichi.
Howie again referred to the impression of each members of the Gospellers. Kaoru Kurosawa reminded him Brian. Yasuoka's voice has similar softness and lightness as Howie's voice. Tetsuya Murakami has a good range of voice and reminds Howie of Kevin. Sakai reminds him of Nick. Sakai's voice is very clear and also reminds him of Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees.
Then Howie told about his favorite music.
He told that he enjoys every genre of music, oldies to the latest songs such as sade, Coldplay, BoysIIMen, John Mayer. He wasn't interested in rock before, but he likes it now. He didn't listen to the Eagles and Def Leppard, but he now enjoys them. Those music has more or less influenced his music. He told that he was influenced by Coldplay, David Matthews, Cher and Sting.
He was asked by the interviewer whether he listened to the Poison.
Then, he answered that he didn't. But this question reminded him that he once had an audition for a video show which gathered talented childeren and let them mimic the Poison. He auditioned for a drummer role but failed. He totally forgot this experience before being asked by the interviewer.
Howie told the Gospellers that it would be great if the Gospellers and the BSb would collaborate on stage. He has lots of ideas of collaboration with them, such as writing more songs for their next album. Howie told he could write uptempo songs for them since he felt that Japanese people loved just "GOOD SONGS." He continued that, in the US, writing uptempo songs was quite difficult, since there were lots of restrictions, the song MUST be HOT, the rhythm must be like this, sampling must be... .. etc.
He also told he came up with lots of good ideas while he was in Japan may be because of FOOD! He told that Japanese food such as SUKIYAKI, TEPPAN-YAKI, SHABUSHABU, UDON noodle and YAKITORI (grilled chicken flavored with TERIYAKI sauce) and of course SAKE helped him be more creative. He felt that the Japanese food contained some CREATIVE JUICE!
Finally the interviewer told Howie, "Wow, you like Japan so much and Japanese food helps you become more creative, why don't you lease a condo room and live there!"
Howie answered "I'd love to if the Gospellers give me lots of work."
